Free Online Photo-Sharing Web Hosts
Reviews of free photo sharing and online photo album services
Free Online Photo-Sharing Services / Web Hosts
This page lists free services that will host your photos and other pictures online. They are convenient if you want to have an online photo album or to showcase your photos on the web. Since these are essentially free web hosts, they are usually also ad-supported, meaning that they will display advertisements on the page where your photos are displayed. Some of these hosts also allow you to link to those photographs from your blog. Some of the photo-sharing sites also allow you to create a public area, where the photos you post are accessible by everyone on the Internet, as well as a private section, where only users you grant access (such as family and friends) can view them.
Note that if you are a professional photographer who wishes to showcase your work, you may prefer to create your own website on a commercial web host. You can then set up your own photo galleries on your website. This gives you better flexibility and makes your site look more professional.
If you need to touch-up your photo, crop it, or otherwise edit it, you should check the Free Image and Photo Editing Programs page. The software tools listed on that page are often more fully-featured than the limited online web-based versions provided by some of the free photo hosting services below. There are also other free online photo editors around.

Free Online Photo Hosting and Sharing Services
- CubeUpload
You can upload image files (JPEG, PNG, GIF) of up to 5MB per file. (Images in the BMP or PDF formats are also accepted, but they are converted to the PNG format.) To reduce abuse of the service, they require you to create an account (which is free) before you can upload. At the time this is written, there is no limitation to the number of files you can store, or the number of times they are viewed.
- Google Photos
You get unlimited storage for photos and videos, although your photos are limited to a maximum of 16 MP (megapixels) and the videos to 1080p resolution.
- Photobucket
(To get the free tier, scroll down and look for the words "free tier" or "for free".) The images you store on this service have a watermark placed on them. You are limited to 250 images, which must not occupy more than 25 MB of space. The terms of service also implies that there is a 25 MB bandwidth limit per 30 day period.
- Flickr
This service supports JPEG, PNG and non-animated GIF; all other photo formats are converted to JPEG. Your images can be as large as 200 MB, and can be no more than 31.25 times wider than they are tall. You are also allowed to upload videos, which are limited to a maximum of 1 GB and a playback of the first 3 minutes. (You will probably need to use a video sharing service if you want to share videos, rather than a image/photo sharing one.) You are only allowed up to 1,000 photos and videos in your account.
- Picasa Web Albums
[Update: this service has been discontinued.] You can either use the free Google Picasa program (see the Free Image and Photo Editing Software page) to publish your photos to this service or do it directly from your web browser. You get 1 GB of space for your photos. Each photo can be no larger than 20 MB or 50 megapixels wide. If you use the Picasa program, you are also allowed to upload videos in one of the following formats: .avi, .asf, .mov (QuickTime), Windows Media, .mpg, .avi, .asf, .mov, .wmv, .mpg, .mpeg, and .mp4. The video must have a frame rate of more than 12 frames per second, bitrate of more than 260 Kbps, file size no larger than 100 MB and contain recognisable video content. Video codecs supported include H.264, H.263, MPEG 1/2/4 and motion JPEG. (Note that if you want to upload videos, the free video hosts are probably more relevant to you.)
