Free Word Processors and Office Suites
This page lists free office suites and standalone word processors. Office suites are taken here to mean software packages that include one or more of the following: a word processor, a spreadsheet program, a presentation manager (that is, something that works like PowerPoint), a database program, and a drawing program. Some of the software packages here are compatible to a greater or lesser extent with the equivalent programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) in Microsoft Office.
Note that the packages listed here are those that you download and install on your own computer. The free online versions, where you work on your documents using a browser, can be found on the Free Online Office Suites: WordProcessors, Spreadsheets, Presentation page.
If you are looking for specialized editors to create websites, you should check out the Free HTML Editors and WYSIWYG Web Editors page instead. Other specialized editors that have their own pages include the Free Simple Text Editors, ASCII Text Editors and Programming Editors and Free Disassemblers, Decompilers, Binary / Hex Editors and Viewers (that allow you to edit binary files).

- LibreOffice Productivity Suite (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux)
LibreOffice is a spin-off (or, in computer lingo, a "fork") of the OpenOffice.org office suite by many of the contributors to the OpenOffice.org project. It includes enhanced versions of the various components of the OpenOffice.org suite (wordprocessor, spreadsheet, presentation software, drawing tools, database, etc), utilising some of the improvements made by other projects (such as the Go-ooo suite mentioned elsewhere on this page). This project is now used as the default office suite in many mainstream Linux distributions, replacing OpenOffice.org.
- Softmaker FreeOffice
Softmaker FreeOffice, available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, comes with a word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation program, compatible with their Microsoft Office equivalents. You can switch its user interface between "modern ribbons" (similar to that sported by current versions of the Microsoft offerings) or its classic versions (which is like the older Office menus and toolbars). The various programs can open and save .docx (ie, Word compatible), .pptx (Powerpoint compatible), and .xlsx (Excel compatible) files, and directly create PDF files. The word processor (TextMaker) also supports the creation of EPUB ebooks. You will need to give them a valid email address to obtain a free product licence key. If you use a language other than English or German, you can download the dictionaries for that language separately and install it.
- Bean: An OS X Word Processor (Mac OS X)
Bean is an open source (and free) word processor for Mac OS X that is "fully Cocoa". It supports a live word count, in-depth statistics about your document, date-stamped backups, a zoom-slider to change the view scale, a page layout mode, auto-saving, alternate colours (for those who don't like the default appearance of black words on a white background), a search (find) facility that supports regular expressions, dictionary, word completion, etc. It natively reads and writes .rtf, .rtfd (rich text with graphics), .bean, .txt, .html, and .webarchive (Apple archive format). It can also import and export to the Word formats (.doc, .docx, .xml) and OpenDocument (.odt) as well as export your document in the PDF format. Note that the website says that Bean is no longer being actively developed as of November 2012.
- Apache OpenOffice.org (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Solaris)
OpenOffice.org has a word processor, presentation software (ie, like Powerpoint), spreadsheet, database, drawing software, database, and a mathematics equation editor. It can handle numerous Microsoft Word formats, the RTF format, its own compressed format, etc. The software is available on numerous platforms, including Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, OS/2, and Android. You can also export your file in the PDF format.
- WriteWay Pro
WriteWay Pro is a software for authors to write books/novels. As such, it has numerous features designed for such a task, such as various book organization features (for acts, chapters, scenes, and a scratch pad), dynamic outline, synopsis, dictionary and thesaurus, word and page count, character profiles and templates, research folders, various printing options (book draft, manuscript, outline, etc), getting the computer to read the book (aloud) to you, exporting the book to RTF, HTML, PDF, .doc and .docx file formats, create publication-ready formats for Kindle and Nook, and so on. This was previously a commercial program, but is now free. Download the demo and use the licence key that is provided on the website (click their "REGISTER" link to find it) to unlock it.
- AbiWord (Linux)
AbiWord is an open source word processor that supports Microsoft Word documents, OpenOffice documents, WordPerfect documents, Rich Text Format documents, HTML web pages, EPUB (via a plugin), etc. Downloads are available for Linux.
- Jarte Word Processor (Windows)
The free version of the Jarte wordprocessor handles Microsoft Word 95, 97, 2000 documents, rich text format (RTF) documents, and plain text (ASCII) documents. It is designed to be a superset of Windows Wordpad (which comes free with Windows). It works on Windows only.
- OxygenOffice Professional (Windows, Linux)
OxygenOffice Professional is basically a repackaged version of the OpenOffice.org software, that contains additional templates, clipart, fonts, samples and even VBA support. The suite includes a wordprocessor, presentation software, spreadsheet, database, drawing software, web editor, equation editor and so on. Pre-compiled binaries are available for Windows and Linux.
- Go-oo Office Suite (Windows, Linux)
[Update: This office suite has now been integrated into the LibreOffice Suite mentioned elsewhere on this page.] Go-oo is yet another repackaged version of the open source OpenOffice.org software. What distinguishes it from the original package is that it includes import filters for the OpenXML format (meaning that it can open native Office 2007/2010 document formats) and WordPerfect graphics, as well as improved support for Excel macros and embedded Visio diagrams. There are also other smaller changes, including a claimed reduced startup time, built-in multimedia integration for Linux, better support for a variety of languages, etc. Like its original, it includes a word processor, presentation software, spreadsheet, database, drawing software, has built-in PDF support, and so on. Versions for Windows and Linux are available.
